We’re Mark and Patty Thomas and the little dog you see in this pictures is Buttons our little Havanese. We are life-long New Jersey residents and know the Bergen County area very well. PetNerds is not just a company to us, but a dream come true and our heart and soul is poured into every aspect of what we do and the customers we serve. We created this business to meld together our love of animals and technology to provide you with a unique pet care service that uses today’s social media solutions to connect you to your pet. On a personal note, we have been married for 26 wonderful years and have had many pets as part of our family such as dogs, cats, birds, fish, lizards, turtles, rabbits, and guinea pigs! Patty grew up around exit 14a off the New Jersey Turnpike and Mark grew up around exit 16w! (See? We told you we were life long NJ residents!)
Sweet Buttons is a former show dog who was born in South Dakota, raised in Iowa by a great family who lived on a large farm, who eventually moved to New Jersey. Through unforeseen circumstances Buttons’ heartbroken family had to give her away. After the passing of our beloved little 14 1/2 year old Jack Russell Terrier, Trixie, we decided our next dog would be a rescue so we went to our favorite animal rescue site, Petfinder.com, and began our search for the perfect little dog. We immediately fell in love with Buttons and the rest is history. As you can see – we’re a very happy family!

Making a First Time Appointment or Informational Inquiry
Call 201-835-2993, email us at firstname.lastname@example.org, or fill out our contact sheet found on the website to either ask a few questions or arrange for a FREE no pressure, no hassle, and no obligation visit to you and your pet in your home. We mean that! We’ll answer your questions and promise not to bother you with a high pressure sales pitch (we don’t like that either!).
If you decide you want to meet with us, during our first visit we will:
Meet you and your pet!
Answer any questions or concerns you may have regarding our services.
If, during our meeting you decide to use our services, we come prepared to review and complete:
- Service agreement form
- Pet information form
- Home care instructions
- Key release agreement form (to allow us to keep your key)
- Vet release form (so we can bring your pet to your vet in an emergency)
Once the paperwork has been completed we will then need:
- Two sets of keys for all locks necessary to enter your home. One set is kept in our safe, the other is used by the pet sitter/walker.
- To become familiar with your home (where is the pet food, leash, how do the locks work, etc).
- Discuss your choice of update regarding your pet.
We “normally” don’t charge for canceling an appointment because we understand that last minute plans or emergencies pop up from time to time. Please cancel your appointments as soon as you know you can no longer keep it. However, if we determine that you “habitually” cancel appointments we reserve the right to refuse future reservations or charge you for the appointment. Of course, we hope it would never come down to that.
New Jersey is known for every kind of weather under the sun and bad weather may cancel your plans and our ability to reach your pet. Of course under these circumstances we never charge for missed appointments or a cancelled vacation. In extreme weather (blizzard, hurricane, flooding, etc) we may not be able to get to your pet, but we try our best to get to them as soon as the roads are opened again. It is very important that you have a nearby neighbor or family member who may be able to get to and care for your pets under these circumstances. New Jersey has been a hotbed of weird weather so we tend to want to be on the overly cautious side!
If we have a signed service agreement on file with no changes to be made (such as adding a new pet or providing new keys), than call or email us anytime to make an appointment, we’ll get back to you within 24 hours regarding availability. Although we try to accommodate all our customers (new and regular alike) we can more easily accommodate our regular customers with last minute appointments if we retain your keys.
Payments can be made by cash or check made payable to PetNerds LLC. We will discuss payment methods during our consultation.
You may wonder why we need 2 sets of keys. We keep 2 sets to have one as back-up and one that we use to enter your home. Your keys are identified with a unique identifier assigned by PetNerds. Should your entry key be lost or stolen we will have a back-up to enter your home to care for your pet. If you choose to leave your keys with us for future assignments, we keep them in a hidden secure locked area when not in use.
Advantages of retaining your key:
- No need to call a locksmith should you lock yourself out of your home. Just call us!
- Peace of mind – if you think you left your iron or stove on, give us a call and we can check it out for you.
Your keys are never identified with your name and address. We use unique identifiers so if it is lost or stolen, no one will know it belongs to you.
We never enter your actual address into our GPS so if it is lost or stolen, no one can pull up your “real” address.
Our cell phones are locked with a pass code so if it is ever lost or stolen, no one can access your phone number.
Our computers are Lo-Jacked and can be remotely disabled and rendered useless if lost or stolen.
